Explanation:
‘RED SQUIRMY FEELING’ captures the contradiction between a person struggling with birth trauma / postpartum depression and the external presentation of “calm” on the faces of those who experience it. The chinese-inspired dragon with its wild eyes, reckless indifference and forcefully confined movement reflects the artist’s inner restlessness. The subject (woman) projects outer stillness which is forced, annoyed and uncomfortable in what feels like a hurricane of sharp, scaled movement. This contrast represents the journey through surviving birth trauma (experienced silently by 45% of women) while navigating early motherhood away from family in a foreign country. This painting features gold metallic acrylic paint which contrasts in the light. (see detail shot)
Artist background:
The artist is returning to acrylic painting after a nearly 10 year journey into graphic design and digital illustration, where projects are purchased commission from the start and haven’t granted the artist much freedom. This new adventure allows an artistic liberty and Renaissance not previously permitted, allowing her to continue to explore concocting monsters and fantasy creatures outside of a game illustration setting. The artist finds fantasy and folklore subjects will continue to serve as an effective mirroring tool across mediums to reflect our inner contradictions and complexities.
