In every Vietnamese family, especially in rural areas, there is almost a kitchen cabinet (name in the South), made of wood or bamboo. According to documents, since the 20th century, this item appeared in Vietnam during the French colonial period, so it was also Vietnameseized into the name Gặc-măng-rê (garde-manger).
In European countries, a garde-manger is a cabinet or shelf that protects food from insects or animals such as cats, birds, rodents, mice, lizards, etc. but airy and not too tight.
Although once popular, especially in rural areas, it has lost much of its usefulness since the advent of refrigerators.
