The Selkie Sirens of Lake Saimaa:  sightings of these freshwater spirits have been few, and in some cases, lethal. Unleashing an attack only when they feel their kin, the Norppa (phoca hispida saimensis), are threatened. These sirens appear in the form of frostbitten young women stranded on the lake.

These creatures are tied directly to the existence of the Saimaa. Should the lake become dry, the water spirits will vanish. The health of the adjacent ecosystem is in turn directly influenced by the presence of the endangered seals. This wisdom is inherited by these water spirits and is held to the utmost importance, driving their need beyond maternal protection, into species preservation.

Like other sirens, they have obtained an incredible power of song. The primary use of this is to crack the ice to ensure breathing passages and escape routes for the Norppa’s well-being.
Additionally they use their enchanting voices to lure danger away from the seals. Equipped with 3 sets of vocal chords, the Sirens of Saimaa can self-harmonize and create unearthly melodies. They also have been known to use their ice-breaking vocal ability to isolate, strand, or drown lake-walkers who come too close.
